Teaching English

As an international language English has become so important as most of the information about new scientific innovations,
ordinary news and others are in English. More people are traveling from one country to another needing to learn some common
language. English has been the common language for them to communicate. In Asia, it has been a focus among the students for
their future career as a result of globalization. For young people or students, learning English to speak and write well means
preparing for the future. But in most of the schools in Asia, English is taught by local teachers who may not be able to speak
fluently. Therefore, these schools are in need of native speakers to teach their children English. These schools can't afford to hire
native speakers. Therefore, any westerners who can speak English and want to volunteer are very much welcomed by the
government authorities, school teachers, students and the communities as a whole.

    Destination countries and locations:

    Thailand:

There are two types of schools in Thailand; government and private. Our teaching program is mainly with government funded
schools. Teachers are regarded as government officers and usually have very good reputation in the society. Students also
respect them very much. They stand up every time you enter the class room and say, “Good morning/afternoon, teacher!” It is
common that students “WAI”, a Thai way of showing respect to superiors, even if they meet teachers on the way, or in the market.

All the schools have semester system. First semester starts from mid-May remains until the end of September or the first week of
October. The second semester starts from first week of November until March. It is good to avoid holiday period in school,
however, if you can not find the suitable time, then we can organize extra classes in Secondary schools or you can work in child
development centers which are normally open all year round.

Thai students start to learn English from Grade 1; however, it is difficult to find high school students who speak fair English.
English courses are designed focusing mainly on grammatical work. Students, in general, shy to speak English due to lack of
confidence. However, they are eager to learn and eager to try with native speakers. Those who speak also not original English,
you need to correct the pronunciation of many words. You have to assess the level of English first before you start teaching, then
you can make your mind what to teach and from which level to start. Teaching is, therefore, very flexible and simple. You will be
teaching practical conversational English using your own skill or talent e.g. by telling story, playing games, performing drama etc.
whatever way you like. The supervisor at school assigned helps to develop the lessons. You will work 3-4 hours a day during
weekdays (Monday to Friday) between 8 am and 4 pm.

    Examples of our projects:

    1. Wat Rattanachai School
           - Teaching in temple school

This school is one of the oldest primary schools. It is managed by the local government (Municipality or Tedsaban). The school
is located at the historical area of Ayuthaya, a world herritage site. The children in the area see and meet many tourists and are
very interested in learning English so that they can speak to the tourists. Volunteers are needed as the school cannot afford to
employ full-time native English speakers to teach the children. There are approximately 178 students at this school. They range
from 5-12 years of age. There are 7 teachers at the school. You will be required to teach conversational English, help teachers
to teach lessons and students to write short stories and essays. You will also be involved in helping the children with singing
and plays and be involved in sports and games. You may also join the children on any trips and camps that are scheduled
during your time at the project. You will also be involved in helping the teachers with their spoken English.

lasting popularity. Approximately 13 kilometers from the city of Chon Buri, it branches off to the right-hand side from Sukhumvit
Highway, at kilometers 104, for a distance of 3 kilometers. Stretching along the beach front, is a 2.5 kilometer Road. Along the
beach, one finds vendors offering drinks and seafood snacks such as squid, mussels and spicy steamed-fish-cakes for sale.
One can rent deck chairs and rubber rings for swimming. Fresh water bathing facilities are also available. The many restaurants
